  ABOUT THE INN

Welcome to the Bark Eater Inn, an original stagecoach stopover for guests traveling from the Lake Champlain Region to Lake Placid.

One definition of the word Adirondack is translated as “they who eat trees,” or “bark-eaters.” It was a derisive term applied by the Mohawk to their northern neighbors, the Algonquin. It was proposed in the 1830s as the name for these northern mountains in the report of the states first official geological survey; typical of the way white-man adopted Indian names, whether or not they were indigenous.

Accommodations:

In our 150-year-old farmhouse, you will find three spacious common rooms and one large fireplace in our living room for guests' enjoyment. We have seven bedrooms in the main Inn, with shared baths. Our décor and atmosphere is very inviting and comfortable.

Our Carriage House, which is located next to the Main Inn, was an actual storage house for the stagecoach and guest carriages. It has been recently renovated and now has four spacious bedrooms, all with private baths, including one with a private deck.

Our hand-hewn Log Cottage, located in a secluded, peaceful area on the property, with two suites, which are ideal for families or large groups. We also have 3 bedrooms available with private baths.

High Country, our "honeymoon suite", is our most popular accommodation boasting a gorgeous hand-carved rustic bed, a gas fireplace, kitchenette, whirlpool tub and a private deck. High Country is located in a private, wooded setting.

Inn Keeper

The Wilson family purchased the Bark Eater in the late 1930s, when it was a working dairy farm. Joe-Pete, the current owner and Inn Keeper, took over the family business in 1970.

Joe-Pete is a former Olympic and world competitor in Nordic skiing, biathlon and bobsledding. Stay tuned for more information on Joe-Pete, a personal page is being developed for the website.

The Bark Eater has been featured in Gourmet Magazine, Snow Country, Men’s Journal and the NY Times.

We invite you to stop by and visit us. Many guests frequently return to enjoy a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie, to chat with the humorous Joe-Pete Wilson and to explore yet another part of the historic Bark Eater. We hope to see you soon!
